Selected Project Experience

Costa Rica

The objective of the project, conducted in 2008 and 2009, was to provide technical assistance to the Costa Rican Ministry of Health, Department of Health Services, Accreditation Unit. The project involved developing and implementing a new model of hospital accreditation that included designing the necessary processes to execute the accreditation activities, and adapting the requirements of international models to the Costa Rican national context.


Egypt

The one-year initiative, which began in September 2010, will prepare the Ministry of Health and Population for ISQua accreditation. It includes a baseline assessment of governance structure and capacities, development and enhancement of policies and standard operating procedures, and establishment of an automated information system for external assessment.


Italy

In collaboration with a local consulting firm, Accreditation Canada International has been contracted to assist the Veneto Region to develop an accreditation program for the acute and home care sectors. This project consists of gathering Canadian experiences in measuring patient satisfaction through questionnaires, interviews and other mechanisms; providing these experiences to the advisory group; developing a framework to establish acute care and home care standards; developing and implementing education sessions; and assessing the feasibility of implementing an accreditation program.


France

Over the past eight years, Accreditation Canada International has collaborated with the Agence nationale d’accréditation et d’évaluation en santé (ANAES) to develop and implement a national accreditation program for the acute care sector. Accreditation Canada International is contracted by ANAES to provide technical knowledge and expertise on accreditation and to develop the major components of the accreditation program, Components include the accreditation agency, standards, survey process, legislative framework, surveyor pool and reporting mechanisms.

Kuwait

The project involved developing a national accreditation agency including legal requirements, governance, organizational structure and roles and responsibilities, as well as developing Kuwait-specific standards and pilot testing in three organizations. The project was implemented in three phases:

Phase 1: Development of the survey process for the Kuwait accreditation agency including self-assessment, survey preparation for health service providers, on-site survey, report production, and development of guidelines and policies and procedures for the accreditation decision.

Phase 2: Recruitment, capacity building and training of Accreditation Specialists to run the accreditation program and assist accreditation clients in preparation for and participation in the accreditation survey.

Phase 3: Design of the surveyor competency model, and recruitment, capacity building and training of surveyors.



Serbia

In 2005, the Government of Serbia secured a credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to help finance the development of its health sector. Under the Serbia Health Project, Accreditation Canada International provided technical assistance in the preparation and establishment of an agency for the licensing and accreditation of health care institutions. The project’s objectives were to:

  • assist the Ministry of Health in formulating a policy to improve the quality and safety of health care institutions;
  • assist the Government of Serbia in the developing a legal basis for the establishment of the agency for accreditation;
  • assist the Ministry of Health in developing standards and the accreditation process;
  • develop the strategic and business plan for the agency for accreditation.
